Yesterday evening, I attended the launch of Ami by Alexandre Mattiussi at Barneys New York flagship store. After reading Alexandre's bio I was really looking forward in attending the launch of his debut collection. He's designed at Dior Homme's 30 Avenue Montaigne line, at Marc Jacobs, and at Givenchy prior to launching Ami, which means 'friend' in French.

Alexandre is not interested in designing fashion clothes with obnoxious bells and whistles that have you leaving the house looking like a proper fashion victim. Instead, Ami's first collection is smart, chic, and understated. Perfect staple pieces in rich colors, good fabrics, and good proportions is really all you need and is exactly what Ami is about. His flannels are perfection! There was a grey flannel that caught my attention and is on my wish list as we speak, as well as, a, ivory flannel front cardigan. Ami's price points are mid-range starting at $90 for a belt and up to $1,200 for a classic leather jacket.

A few weeks ago, a friend/client asked me if I could take him shopping to assist in updating his wardrobe. We go to Barney's because it's the best one-stop shop for cool shit. We get him a pair of jeans and head over to shoe heaven and get him into a pair of patent leather and suede Lanvin trainers. When I look to my right, I see a pair of Margiela high-tops I used on a shoot earlier this summer. I loved that hi-top! So much, I said if I were to see them in black I would consider buying them. So, there they were in black, on sale half off, and calling my name. I saw those infamous red giant initials that read, "LP," and gasped a bit. There is something about the giant initials for last pair that makes you crave the shoe even more. I shimmied my foot into it, checked for fit, and hit the register. It was one of those impulse purchases you see Carrie Bradshaw make in Sex in the City. I waited a week or two before I wore them because I'm not keen on making impulse purchases- it's not like we are talking about a pair of jeans from H&M here. Some purchases require some thought... I thought, and thought, and tried them on some more until I decided to keep them.

Here is an image from an editorial I styled for Idol Magazine entitled, Island Retreat. I became so obsessed with this salmon blazer by Timo Weiland when I saw it I knew I had to shoot it. It had this amazing stripped lining that I knew needed to be seen. So, I pushed up the sleeves, which always makes a look a bit cooler, and exposed the lining. It added a little something special to the overall look.

Everyone’s goal is to keep as cool as possible, but guys, walking about wearing ribbed tanks or shall I say the dreadful word: wife-beater, is just never a good look and just plain tacky. For example, this color-blocked tank by Matthew Miller that arrived early this afternoon for next weeks shoot and I am absolutely in lust with it. You can wear it with anything. Pair it with cut-offs or layer it under a blazer for cool summer nights on the town.

One of the bonuses about traveling to other fashion cities is being able to see other up-and-coming designers. In September, I went on my very first trip to London. I really appreciate London designers. On men's wear day, I saw Matthew Miller's spring summer presentation and was immediately intrigued. I love Matthew's minimal aesthetic and how he played with fabrics like wool gabardine, neoprene, and jersey in his spring collection. One of my favorite pieces was this navy wool gabardine two button double-breasted cropped jacket with a white Tyvek stripe. For me navy wins by default because I just love navy. Every man should have a navy jacket in his closet too. Anyway, I love the fit if of this jacket and the Tyvek stripe is a fun and interesting spin on an essential navy jacket.

While I was in London for fashion week, a friend of mine introduced me to photographer Jonathon Oppong who was working on a photography exhibit, 'Smoke without Fire.' The images were to provoke the question, 'Can smoke make the ugly beautiful or the beautiful ugly...?' I was their to see Jonny in action and it was an honor to have Jonny take my photo as part of the exhibit. If you're in London you should definitely check out the exhibit.

A Conscious Collection by H&M

This April, H&M will introduce A Conscious Collection as part of its focus on sustainability. The collection, which is for men, women and children is made from environmentally adapted and greener materials such as cotton, Tencel, and recycled polyester. "By designing recurring Conscious Collection we have the opportunity to show in a variety of ways what's possible using more sustainable fabrics," says Ann-Sofie Johansson, Head of Design at H&M. A minimalist collection in shades of white, which was all over the runways for spring, has a rather relaxed and preppy look for men. The men's collection consists of a white two-button blazer, collarless tees and Henley's, as well as, tanks for layering, and white five-pocket jeans and tailored white trousers.

If you have a beach wedding to attend this summer like I do this light and airy collection will be perfect for it. The Conscious Collection will be on sale at all H&M stores on April 14th.

Dror's Peacock Chair in Rhianna's 'S&M' Video

While watching Rhianna's new video, 'S&M,' which I am obsessed with, I noticed a very familiar chair by New York artist Dror Benshetrit. I remember seeing The Peacock Chair when it debuted in 2009 at New York design week and falling in love with it. I am a bit surprised the Peacock Chair has not been featured in more videos and fashion editorals. Rhianna of course looks amazing perched in the chair wearing a pink latex number devouring pink caramel popcorn.

Dior Homme’s, Kris Van Assche, tapped Willy Vanderperre to create a video showcasing the brand's spring/summer collection. The video is entitled, "The Time I Had Some Time Alone," and debuts Monday on the Dior Homme site. The moody lighting on these stills are beautiful and can only imagine what the film will be like. I have been wanting to style and art direct a fashion video for quite some time now. I guess I better get on it before it's on to the next!

I read New York Magazine's fashion blog The Cut religiously and when I logged onto their site I noticed a very familiar railroad spike ring and cuff by Club Monaco on their Best Bet post. The railroad spike ring and cuff in question is by Club Monaco and is knocked- off or shall I say inspired by Giles & Brother. I am an avid fan of Giles and Brother and have blogged and used their pieces in my editorials. The railroad spike ring and cuff at Club Monaco is roughly half the price than the ring and cuff offered at Giles & Brother.

It's funny I see this post today because I planned on going to the Philip Crangi store on Little West 12th Street to buy myself a belated Christmas gift. Anyway, do you see any resemblances between the Club Monaco and Giles & Brother railroad spike ring and bracelet? Which do you prefer?

Afghan Hands Fundraiser

I am back from London fashion week and completely exhausted. Between prepping for my men's shoot for IDOL magazine and the men's shows I am almost cracked out. Needless to say I needed a day off to decompress.

Today, I wanted to bring to your attention an organization dedicated in empowering Afghan widows by offering them independence in the form of an education and a decent wage. When Celebrity makeup artist Matin Maulawizada founded the organization in 2005, there were five women in the program and now Matin has been able to personally change the lives of over 200 Afghan widows. On September 30, 2010, Afghan Hands and Orlane will hold a cocktail in memory of Naz Toloui—former Vice President of Orlane, Paris, the first board member of Afghan Hands, and the New York Launch of the Nazaneen Toloui Foundation—to raise money for Afghan Hands and increase awareness of the dire situation endured by many women in Afghanistan. Because it takes $10,000 per month to maintain the Afghan Hands program, we hope to raise $30,000 to help the organization expand and include even more Afghan widows in the program.

The event will be held at the Longchamp store in Soho hosted by Claire Danes and Cynthia Nixon. Individual tickets will be sold for $125 and group tickets for 10 will be sold for $1,000. The purchaser of a group ticket will receive one of the following gifts:

Yves Saint-Laurent has produced a video featuring their sneakers for fall/winter. I do not wear sneakers too often, but these YSL kicks are amazing. Remember the all silver high-tops? KILLER! It Feels Like Fall

It really has been feeling like fall has arrived these past few days in New York. It's a bit weird to have 67 degree days in August but I am not complaining- fall is my favorite season. Several weeks ago, I purchased this AMAZING leather jacket from Yigal Azrouel I couldn't fathom purchasing it because it was 90 degrees out. Nonetheless, sweating like whore in church, I walked out of the Yigal store with the jacket. I just could not resist, plus I got such a great deal on it. Everyday since the purchase I was hoping for a cool day to wear it and finally I can. I planned on waiting until fashion week to wear it but waiting for September to arrive was like Chinese Water Torture.

There is nothing worse than stained teeth- I skeeve it. Yellow stained teeth are on The Most Horrible Things To Happen To Your Mouth List next to cavities and halitosis. Although, I have never had my teeth whiten professionally I am a MAJOR sucker for teeth whitening products. When I visit the dentist for my cleaning and check-up I always ask, "Are my teeth white enough?" Just for proof and confirmation I make them bring out a chart with these little fake teeth with different shades of white and not-so-white teeth. I always make it to the whitest on the chart (YES!) but my teeth never seem to be as white as say Whitney Houston. Who, by the way, has to have the whitest teeth on the entire Universe. Google image a picture of Ms. Whitney Houston's teeth if you don't believe me. I'm sure they're veneers but I still love them.

I remember going to a Yigal Azrouel show, back when gift bags were de rigueur at the shows, and receiving a teeth whitening product by GO SMiLE called FlashLiTES. It was like hitting the jackpot! But I was never able to find them again or perhaps I never looked hard enough. One day, the Legendary GILT GROUPE had a sale on GO SMiLE and I ordered two Flashlites packets. In each packet, comes 7 single use touch-up viles. If you are waiting for the answer to the magical question- Do they work? Yes, they do! I'm kind of obsessed. Not only do they whiten your teeth but they also freshen your breath- perfect for that special first date, or after drinking coffee or red-wine or a smoke. Red stained teeth and cigarette breath are never in fashion! If you are going to use them on a first date do not, I repeat, do not use them at the table. That is if you want a second date. Since, today is Earth Day I wanted to present to you Piado, an eco-friendly line that focuses on the basics: underwear. My Antonio Azzuolo Spring Must-Have

One of the major advantages of being a fashion stylist is getting your hands on items that you would only be able to purchase if you were in, say, Japan. Which was the case with this black Anorak from Antonio Azzuolo's spring collection. It was only sold to retailers in Japan, which is a shame because I can so see this selling out in Barney's New York. Barney's or Bergdorf get with it! I first saw it on Antonio's website and had to pull it for IDOL magazine's 'Forever Young.' When I saw it in person at Antonio's studio I knew I had to have it. Thankfully Antonio Azzuolo's sample sale came around and I was able to purchase it. I just had to have it! It's so chic you could wear it casual with jeans, tee and high-tops or with a button-down, cropped trouser and lace-ups. Perfect for spring days like today when you only need something light to throw on and you just don't want to wear a leather jacket.

What to Pack...

This evening, I leave for South Dakota. I bet your head just tilted to the side and your eyebrows arched with a confused face that reads, “Why are you going to South Dakota for?” Well, to answer that question, I am going to meet the Parents. Huge step, yes I know, but what the hell am I going to pack? Of course that would consume my thoughts! As I write, I have a bed covered with folded clothes and I do not have a clue what is actually going into my carry-on. A co-worker of mine said she likes to dress according to her atmosphere, i.e., if you’re in Miami you bring something more cheese-a-rella and if you go to LA you bring more casual. I get it. So, if I take Erin’s advice what do I bring? ‘Brokeback Mountain’ inspired apparel. So not me! The closest thing I have to mountain or hiking anything is a lined flannel and its Marc Jacobs from Fall 09. So, obviously, that’s def being packed, but what the hell else? Hiking shoes? Don’t own! Closest thing is perhaps suede Pierre Hardy desert boots. Since, the weather might be a bit shady I’m thinking knits. Maybe Yigal? Anything from his first men’s collection never fails me. I need to hurry up and get packing! Wish me luck!

Alexander Wang Men's Tees Available Online

You cannot walk down the street in an Alexander Wang tee without someone excitedly saying, "I have the same tee how comfy are they!" They have a bit of a cult following. If you have ever wondered why it's because they are indeed really f-ing comfortable. I wore mine yesterday while returning samples-I wanted to feel light because my trunk filled with samples was definitely not feeling very light. Back in January, I wrote a post entitled, 'Sheer Madness,' about how sheer is a big trend for spring. If you are not in the mood to hustle your body for one of those Dior button downs the Wang tees are a great way to stay on trend, which is also offered in a tank version-great when you are really feeling yourself and want to show off all the hard work you've been putting in at the gym. They look so awesome with a leather jacket or under a blazer with jeans and high-tops. As we transition into summer, Wang's tees are perfect for those carefree summer days when you are sweating like a whore in church waiting for the train. They are so soft and light as if you have nothing on, which is exactly how you want to feel. I always say New York is the last place I want to be in the summer because the humidity is so out of control or OOC, as Rachel Zoe would say. Robert Geller Announces the Opening of the Key Shop

Robert Geller announces the opening of the Key Shop, a collaboration with Greg Armas of Assembly. Located at 129 Rivington Street in New York City, the Key Shop will carry the full Robert Geller line, limited edition Robert Geller items created specifically for the shop and the debut collection of Assembly New York. An additional assortment of vintage jewelry, artwork and literature will also be offered.

The genesis of the Key Shop was a conversation between Robert and Greg in which Robert expressed a desire to showcase personal favorites from his collections that weren't picked up by stores. They selected the location based on its accessibility and because of the role Rivington Street has played in shaping New York City's musical heritage.

Robert and Greg hope to engage shoppers by hosting a series of interactive workshops. Upcoming programs include sessions on crafting boutonnieres and creating eclectic cocktails with a local mixologist. Additional programming will be announced soon.

Sheer Madness

While going through the Spring 2010 shows and adding things to my please-buy-me-list I noticed sheer garments are having a bit of moment. Dior Homme, Prada and Calvin Klein have given us a little sheer or a lot of sheer something's for spring. Everything from sheer tanks and tees to button downs, blazers, and even trousers-thanks to Ms. Prada. Most men stay clear from sheer. If you have the body for it why not wear it. Perhaps, they think they will look a bit queer, but I think it can be sexy on the right guy. Pair it with a great fitting blazer and you'll have a great look for a night on the town. I must admit-I'm a sucker for a sheer shirt, especially black and this spring/summer they are so many amazing sheer options available.

I love the sheer jacket sleeves at Calvin Klein- so minimal, so clean, so Calvin, and so amazing. They were beautifully paired with a shirt and tie, chinos, and desert boots. I would kill to wear that jacket for fashion week. Kris Van Assche hit a home run with sheer at Dior. Although, there were tons of sheer black he played with brown and grey as well. I expect to be broke and pan-handling New York subways this spring/summer for those sheer shirts and jackets and it will be so worth it. Prada did the best sheer meshy polos, trousers and topcoats this season. Doing what she knows best Ms. Prada taking classic pieces, like the polo, and tweaking it in her own way. With all this sheer going around for spring/summer I suggest you start hitting the gym. Six packs are not included with those Dior sheer tanks! David Barton anyone?

Them Atelier Wants to Bring Affordable Denim Back.

Them Atelier is a denim brand from California whose goal is to make affordable denim without the bells and whistles. Which is a good thing- one thing we do not need is another ~~tacky~~ denim brand with extra pockets, extra stitching, and an extra digit on the price tag. Nothing is better than clean denim with a good fit at an even better price point. Is anyone else sick of the over embellishments on jeans? Denim by Them Atelier are available in two different fits River, which is a tapered jean, and Knight a skinny jean. They also offer a raw denim in a tapered fit, as well as, black and white (not two-tone)stretch denim skinny.

Rodarte for Men

Kate and Laura Mulleavy, the duo behind Rodarte, have premiered pieces of their first men's collection available at Opening Ceremony. Rodarte is known for their meticulous and romantic dresses, which has scored them a 2008 CFDA Award. When I heard about their foray into men's wear I was excited to see what they had to offer and I like what I see. My favorite being the black and blue crewneck sweater. Although, you might want to consider using your left lung and Amex as a form of payment because these pieces come with a hefty price tag- sweaters and cardigans are retailing for $2,760. The silver lining is you can live with one lung and breathing is totally over-rated anyway!

Hunting for Collar Stays

Collar Stays by Barneys New York

A few years ago, a friend of mine gave me stainless steel collar stays as a graduation gift. They are the perfect set of six in various sizes. They came in black lizard embossed box with velvet lining- so perfect. Every man should have something similar to keep his stays in. I thought this would be a great stocking stuffer gift for my bf, but who the hell would have thought it would be such a pain the ass to find something like it.

Barneys was my first destination, naturally, but before I left the house I gave the men's accessories department a ring and the sad sales girl told me they had them in. I hauled ass to Barneys and when I arrived- everyone on the sales floor (because I asked everyone) said they sold-out. Can you imagine the state of fury I was in? I was forced to go to the legendary Bloomies on 59th Street and the only thing they had to offer was a set of eight in a tacky clear plastic box, which reminds me of the same clear plastic box you get your pot in. I purchased it out of desperation.

The next day I went to Nordstrom where I was offered slightly different options by David Donahue and Würkin. Although, the David Donahue collar stays did come in an actual box- I just did not appreciate his name splattered on every collar stay and I was just over the Würkin's magnet stay shtick. What ever happened to our simple and plain collar stays?

I have returned the collar stays from Bloomindales. Sorry Bloomies, but you should not have discontinued that perfect leather box set. Some say I'm just a pain in the ass, but I think I know what I want. Nothing wrong with that! I will have to wait until Barneys receive a new shipment. Hopefully, their sales people will it have together by then...

Don't Sweat Sweats

I have never been a fan of trends- especially, when the trend of the season happens to be sweat pants. Sweat pants have been featured on many Spring 2010 runways- designers like Yigal Azrouel, Genarra, Chronicles of Never, and Band of Outsiders have all presented sweat pants as the next "IT" thing everyone should have. Oak, one of New York hippest boutiques, is selling cashmere sweats- go figure! Wearing sweatpants outside of the gym is just so odd to me. Wearing them elsewhere is like wearing a Speedo while shopping for organic strawberries at Whole Foods. No gym no sweats, no pool, no Speedo. Sweat pant aficionados say, "I just want to be comfortable," but the being "comfortable" excuse only translates to laziness- especially after 10 am. Is a pair of Levi's and desert boots that uncomfortable? Probably not! So, if you decide to buy into the sweat pants trend, whether they are the old-school tight-at-the-ankles style, a la Champion Sportswear, or are made of cashmere- just keep in mind sweat pants are still sweat pants no matter the price point or designer label. Ladies you aren't excuse either!

Android Homme for High-Top Enthusiasts

South Beach is known for everything flashy and posh. There are gorgeous hotels, like the Fontainebleau, posh-white clubs like Nikki Beach, and Chanel did present a cruise collection in Miami, so, if it's good enough for Chanel its good enough pour moi. High fashion is just not reflected through the plethora of tight Ed Hardy tee's you see guys wearing. When I visited Miami two years ago I knew there had to be more to Miami fashion than blinged-out tees, cargo shorts and Havaiana's, and last week I was on a mission to find it.

The Webster is an exclusive three-level space devoted to fashion, jewelry and photography. Perfect for Miami Beach tastemakers, jet setters and fashion fiends, like myself, needing their next luxury fix. The founders Laure Hériard Dubreuil, Frederic Dechnik and Milan Vukmirovic, cofounder of renowned Paris boutique, Colette, carefully curate everything in The Webster. Famed architect Henry Hohauser built the Webster Hotel in the late 1930’s. The façade and lobby are classified historical landmarks and were restored to their original 1930’s design. Originally built as a four-story hotel, one of the four levels was removed and the ceilings adjusted to give a new dimension with a classic Art Deco 40’s vibe. The Webster, features select pieces from BDDW, an American furniture company from New York known for their heirloom quality solid wood furniture. Beginning on the ground level and evolving throughout each floor, The Webster’s wall space showcases photographs of internationally recognized photographers and artists. These photos play an important part of The Webster’s esthetics and are also available for sale- collections include works by Antonio Caballero, Denis Darzacq, Nick Clements, Joel Meyerowitz and Jeanloup Sieff.

Upon entering The Webster, you pass the in-house acclaimed Parisian restaurant, Caviar Kaspia. The ground floor is also dedicated to luxury sportswear lines, high-tops for sneaker enthusiasts by Balenciaga and Lanvin, and prestigious swimwear brands like, Robinson Les Bains. On the second floor, was a relatively empty room with just a few long wooden tables. On them, was a display of handbag collaborations for BE LIVE Fundraising. Designers like Roger Vivier, Calvin Klein and Jason Wu recreated the Wayuu "susu" mochila, which are wool and goat hair bags made by the women of the Wayuu Community in of La Guajira in Colombia. On the third floor you will find some exclusive pieces made only for The Webster, which is a genius idea. Who wants to return to New York or anywhere else with a shirt one can easily purchase and Bergdorf Goodman or Selfridges? You may find everything from Tom Ford tortoise shell tanning goggles to a Prada studded collar button-down to Pierre Hardy cap-toe oxfords. Julia, a pretty sales associate from France, broke my heart when they had no smaller sizes in a Marc Jacobs shirt I was drooling over. She tells me, "Everything on the sales floor is the smallest size." Something tells me back stock does not exist.

Before I left for Miami, I said to myself, "Ryan, you cannot leave Miami without visiting The Webster." I heard so many great things about The Webster; it was great to finally experience it. I took a walk to the second floor where I found Fashion Heaven: Marc, Prada, YSL, and, of course, Trussardi. My bf pointed towards this awesome zipper belt by Trussardi. I tired it on and once I knew it fit- it did not leave my sight and back to the Concrete Jungle we went.

Two more days and I am off to South Beach for a mini vacation, which is long over do. I still have no clue what I am going to pack. I think my Jil Sander blazer from SS 09 should come with me- especially, since I have only worn it once. Although, South Beach can be a bit trashy they do have a lot of posh boutiques. I will be paying a visit to some boutiques in the area. Stay tuned...

Balenciaga's Asymmetric Warmth

For those who have never shopped on Browns- it's basically, a one-stop shop of all the luxuries you have ever wanted. I found this Asymmetric Wool Coat by Balenciaga over the weekend and I want it. I'll be dramatic and say it's the only thing I want to keep me warm this winter. Clearly, I am not the only one that feels this way because there are only three sizes available and none of them are mine. Story of my life!
